In peaceful slumber with his kindred dead,
The Patriot hero here reclines his head;
For freedom's sake Heaven had preserved his life,
Amidst the Cannons roar ~ the battles strife;
The brave, the good, lo ~ Washington's compeer,
The Soldier-Statesman now lies mouldering here.
The heirs of freedom long will consecrate
This spot so sacred to a name so great.

Senator John Holmes
Husband of Knox's youngest daughter Caroline
