GRASSES

    American Red Clover
This was used to sow fields, much like herds grass. 1
    American White Clover
This was also another seed used to sow fields. In McMahon's American Gardener, he says that one of the best seeds for lawns is white clover. 2
    American Timothy Grass
Also called Herds Grass. It is a perennial European grass that is widely grown for hay. It is said to have been brought to America accidentally in contaminated hay or manure from Europe or Asia. It is an erect clump forming grass, with dense, cylindrical spike-like flower heads and swollen bulb-like stem bases. Flowering occurs in June and early July. New England farmers sowed the so called "English grasses" which included timothy (herds grass), red and white clover, orchard grass and red top. 3
    Cannary Seed
This is a small grain crop grown mainly for livestock, poultry and bird feed. 4
    English Lucern Seed
Lucern is a legume which is grown mainly for silage. It can be made into hay, and is a popular forage for horses. It needs root growth and performs badly on waterlogged ground. 5
    English Rye Grass
Also called lolium. There are both annual and perennial types. There are two varieties, English Rye and Italian Rye. Knox purchased English Rye, which is a perennial that can grow up to two feet high. The stem curves in and out and the flower clusters rest inside each curve. 6
    English Treyfoile Seed
There are three types of trefoil: broadleaf, narrowleaf and big. It is a perennial plant, and a type of legume. They have flowers and are attractive to bees for nectar and pollen. It is an excellent legume for poorer soils and thrives in soil that is waterlogged. It is commonly used for hay, forage, conservation plantings and wildlife habitat, also for honey production and land reclamation. 7
    Garden Seeds
Probably purchased here seeds that were common to most gardens, the store or nursery he ordered them from had probably been doing business with him for a while and knew what he regularly bought.
    Grass Seed
This may have been a mixture of some of the above mentioned seed. All these seeds are to basically grass seeds, to make lawns. Or, possibly same as the garden seeds in that the person he was ordering them from could have known what he regularly bought and needed.
    Herds Grass Seed
Same as American Timothy Grass (see above)
